BY CAR
To fully explore St. Barthélemy (St. Barth / St. Barts / St. Barths), car rental is highly recommended. A valid driver's license is required. Reservations in advance are suggested, especially in winter. Popular vehicles in St. Barth include Suzukis, Daihatsus and Smart cars. Basic Japanese compacts and minivans are also available. The island is crisscrossed with about 25 miles of steep, narrow and winding roads, so careful driving is advised. The general speed limit is 45 km/h (28 mph).

Most car rental companies now take major credit cards, but request a two- or three-day minimum rental. There are two gas stations on the island, one near the airport and one in Lorient. There is an automated/credit card pump at the airport station. Gas is rather expensive on this small island.

BY MOTORBIKE OR SCOOTER
Motorbikes, mopeds and scooters are plentiful. They can be hazardous on the twisting roads and hilly terrain. Local law requires that you wear a helmet and a motorbike or driver's license is required.

BY TAXI
There are two taxi stations in St. Barthélemy (St. Barth / St. Barts / St. Barths), one at the airport and one in Gustavia.
